Whooping Crane Defends Territory

from $4.50

We photographed from a private blind on a late afternoon and watched this Whooping Crane defend his territory. He successfully chased off a family of Sandhill Cranes and was still calling after them even though they’d flown away. An impressive wing span of about 7 to 8 feet and standing approximately five feet tall, Whooping Cranes are the largest of the crane family. Their call is loud and magical.

I was lucky to have a wonderful private guide for a trip to Rockport Texas and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in search of Whooping Cranes. They are the largest of the cranes and were near extinct just a few years ago. Still fighting that status, their numbers are slowly increasing with help from scientists, researchers and those protecting habitat. The other birds and wildlife in the area are also not to be missied and I’m so happy I was able to capture a few images in the short time I was there.
