[WE-05-A] POWDEROLOGY: The Two-Day Class
Wednesday & Thursday, April 7-8, 2010
9am - 4pm
Instructor: Linda Steider
Number of Sessions: 2
All skill levels
Class Limit: 12
Class Fee: $480
Materials Fee: $40 (Covers all glass, mica, disposable particulate respirator, and misc supplies used in class.)
A deeper exploration into the possibilities of personal expression with glass powders in a hands-on, fun, experimental atmosphere. Working with small components on the first day, we'll practice a variety of techniques unique to glass powders, including color blending and shading for "painting," sgrafitto, combing and feathering, line work, resists, faux sandblasting, and how to pull out over-sifted powder. We'll play with mica, Glass Glow, dichroic, and irid glass, learning how they interact with and relate to powders. Discover how to "correct" a problem, after it's been fired. Design and color issues will be discussed and practiced.
The second day will focus on expanding the previous day's results, whether working larger or further studies in a specific area of interest. You'll take home a set of samples to remember the techniques allowing you to easily reproduce this work in your own studio. Some samples may have to be picked up the following morning.
Students bring: regular safety glasses and safety glasses for looking into the kiln (instructor will have a few pair to share); glass cutter and pliers; sketch pad, eraser, exacto knife and pad, fine stabilo or sharpie pen; imaginative implements to draw through powders, paintbrushes (2 or more, multiple sizes, including very fine to medium sizes); sifters, screens, spoons, eyedroppers to distribute the powdered glass onto your "canvas"; and clay shapers if you have them.
