POWDEROLOGY: Exploring Glass Powders, Surface Design for Glass

Instructor: Linda Steider
Cascade Glass Art Center
9003 151st Ave NE, Redmond, WA
Beginning to Intermediate Students

Dates: May 3-4, 2008
Number of Sessions: 2
Time: 10am-4pm
Limit: 10
Class Fee: $350
Supply Fee: None

Explore the possibilities of personal expression with this underused form of glass in a hands on, fun, experimental atmosphere. Working with small components, students practice a variety of techniques unique to glass powders, including color blending and shading for 'painting', sgrafitto, combing and feathering, line work, resists, templates, faux sandblasting, and how to pull out oversifted powder. If you have it available, we can work with Glass Glow™ and mica, as well as dichroic and irid glass, learning how they interact with and relate to glass powders. Students will also discover how to 'correct' a problem after it's been fired. Design and color issues will be discussed and practiced. Students will take home a set of samples to remember the techniques, allowing them to easily replicate this work in their own studio.

DESIGN 101: The Basics

April 6, 2008
Glass Craft & Bead Expo, Las Vegas
Instructor: Linda Steider
Number of Sessions: 1
Class Fee: $145
Materials Fee: $15
Material fee covers misc. class supplies, including gouache and brush sets.

Design is visual language. The more visually literate we are, the easier it will be to use design fundamentals in our studio glass. In this class you will develop a good visual vocabulary, and practice using it with specific design exercises. We'll discuss the principles and elements of design; what they are, what they mean and why they're important. Discover the meaning and emotion behind certain shapes and colors and how to put them to work for you. Learn about formal and informal balance; to develop tension or serenity, different types of perspective and how to put it all together into a composition. Approach your next project with visual intelligence after attending this fast-paced, introductory level class.

Students should bring to class:
- Drawing pad (heavier paper weight than sketch pads, 9" x 12" is a good size)
- Soft drawing pencils, such as 6B, 4B, 2B, HB; standard #2 is ok if you can't find drawing pencils.
- If you already have paintbrushes, bring various sizes; some will be provided in class.

If students have difficulty finding supplies, please contact instructor: linda@steiderstudios.com.

PÂTE DE VERRE: An Innovative Method Without Molds

April 3, 2008 OR April 5, 2008
Glass Craft & Bead Expo, Las Vegas
Instructor: Linda Steider
Number of Sessions: 1
Limit: 12
Class Fee: $235
Materials Fee: $25

Description:  This time tested version of pâte de verre ("glass clay") will free you from messy molds! Learn how to mix powdered glass into a paste and sculpt it in a variety of small forms, including cabashons, buttons, beads, and fetishes. We'll start with powder wafers to heat things up, then using a non-toxic liquid binder you'll discover the secrets of a very unique method, without waiting for the glass to freeze. Your peers won't believe the samples you take home were made without molds!

You'll take home a finished small sculpture that you've formed & sculpted with glass paste from the morning session.

We'll spend the afternoon making glass paste pattern bars that can be turned into beads, buttons, jewelry, magnets, etc. I throw in powder wafers mainly to get the kilns hot to help dry the wet paste, but if you aren't already making and using them, it's a quick lesson on another technique as well.

Students need to bring: regular safety glasses and safety glasses for looking into the kiln (welding type glasses if you have no others; instructor will have a few pair to share); hair dryer; sculpting tools for small forms (such as dental tools, toothpicks, makeup applicators, etc.); sifters; eyedropper; small paintbrushes and/or rubber tipped clay shaper.
