GLASS FUSING FOR KIDS
Ages 11+

Nov 15, 16, 17, and 18, 2008
1:00 - 4:30 pm
Instructor: Linda Steider
Location: HR Middle School, Woodshop
Number of Sessions: 4
Limit: TBA
Class Fee: $120
Supply Fee: Included (covers all glass, and supplies including jewelry findings, magnets, and related materials needed to finish projects in class.)

Linda Steider has transformed her basic fused glass class into a learning experience for kids 11+. We'll have a little fun with science and a little fun with art while having a lot of fun with glass. Learn how to cut it, slice it and dice it, and then fuse it back together again. Projects will be transported to Linda's studio and heated hot enough to melt it back into one piece. Students will make a series of small items for holiday gift-giving or to keep for themselves, including coasters, tiles, jewelry, pony tail holders, and refrigerator magnets.

Kids who have attended summer glass camps may choose to make more complex projects and work more independently.

Students must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes. If they have glass tools, please bring them for use in class.

To register, call HR Community Ed at 541.386.2055.

GLASS ART FOR KIDS
Grades 3 & 4

Oct 8-10, 2008
Instructor: Linda Steider
Location: Whitson
Number of Sessions: 4
Limit: 12

Class Fee: $21. Limited scholarships available

In this 3-day after-school session, 3rd and 4th grade students will tour White Salmon Glassworks, design their own refrigerator magnets, then translate those designs into a functional art object.

Day One:
A walking field trip, touring White Salmon Glassworks; then return to school and begin designing their projects.

Day Two:
Translate designs -- using crushed glass -- into mosaic-style glass tiles, which I will transport to my studio and fire overnight in a glass kiln.

Day Three:
Complete the project by glueing magnets to the backs of finished glass tiles; critique projects.

Provided supplies: All glass, glue, magnets, kiln, and paper for designs.

Supplies school or student provides: pencil, crayons, stiff paintbrushes for moving crushed glass, tweezers if available (makes it easier to position glass frit); and on the last day a shoebox (or similar box) to transport freshly glued magnets home (glue takes 24 hours to dry).
